Some Are Luckier: Another Spanish Town Lifts €468 Million
However, El Gordo lottery worked out much better for another Spanish village that suffered a wildfire earlier this year. According to BBC, the town of La Bañeza (pop. ~11,000) has shared €/$468 million from the very same 2025 El Gordo Christmas lottery jackpot.
The winning number (79432) delivered €/$400,000 per €/$20 décimo (tenth ticket), with many tickets sold locally — including through the town’s football club. The prize came just four months after devastating summer wildfires burned thousands of hectares around the area, killed at least one resident, and left the community reeling.
Mayor Javier Carrera called it an “injection of excitement and hope” for a town still hurting from the fires and a recent factory closure that cost dozens of jobs. For residents, the windfall doesn’t erase the tragedies, but it’s a welcome sign that good news can still happen. As one winner put it, the money is for spreading around and enjoying life again.
