“It was fun for a minute”: Thousands of Norwegians Received False Lottery Jackpot Winnings

Thousands of Norwegian lottery players experienced crushing disappointment after receiving notifications about massive jackpot wins — only to realise a few hours later that their supposed prizes were completely false due to a calculation mistake, as The Guardian reports.

From Riches to Regret

One Friday evening the national lottery operator’s Norsk Tipping subscribers were alerted they had struck it rich in the Eurojackpot drawing. Soon after, however, gamblers were notified that their big money prizes were declared by mistake caused by a “manual error” in the company’s currency conversion system.

“Norsk Tipping receives prize values from Germany in Eurocents, which we then convert to Norwegian kroner. During this conversion process, a manual coding mistake was made in our gaming system”, — the company explained in a statement released the following day.

The operator revealed that prize amounts had been mistakenly multiplied by 100 rather than divided by 100, causing players to think they had won far larger sums than reality.

“We removed the false prize figures from our website and mobile app Friday night”, — Norsk Tipping stated. Accurate winnings were distributed around 3:15 a.m. local time, and the process finished by roughly 4:30 a.m. The company confirmed no players actually received incorrect payments.

Many Norwegians had already begun planning how to spend their phantom fortunes, including one couple who thought they’d won 1.2 million kroner (€/$  118,901) while in the middle of home renovations, according to The Guardian.

Another player believed they had claimed 1.9 million kroner (€/$ 188,260) in the mix-up. “It was very fun for a minute”, — Lise Naustdal commented to the publication.

CEO Quits Amid Lottery Controversy

Following the widespread error, Norsk Tipping CEO Tonje Sagstuen stepped down on Sunday, June 29, CBS News reported. She had held the position since September 2023.

“I deeply regret that we’ve let down so many people, and I completely understand their anger toward us”, — Sagstuen stated, according to the outlet. — “I’ve received numerous messages from individuals who had started planning vacations, apartment purchases, or home improvements before discovering the amounts were wrong. To them I can only say: I’m sorry! Though I realise that’s little comfort”.

Norsk Tipping issued its own apology for the blunder and the disappointment it caused customers. The company is currently investigating how the incident occurred.
