New Year’s Eve Strike at Crown Melbourne
On New Year’s Eve 2025, about 600 staff at Crown Melbourne walked off the job for four hours in a bold protest that caught many partygoers off guard.
Pay Dispute Sparks Walkout at Australia’s Largest Casino
As reported by local media, the workers, including table dealers, bar staff, and security, are represented by the United Workers Union. They rejected Crown’s latest contract offer because it creates a clear pay divide. Current employees would get solid raises (3.25%, 3%, and 3% over three years), while new hires would start at significantly lower rates. Dropping entry-level pay from around A$34.22 per hour to A$28.84.
Crown brought in temporary workers to keep the New Year’s celebrations rolling smoothly. The casino insists current pay remains well above industry averages and is committed to a fair deal.
More Industrial Action Possible After 87% Rejection Vote
The union sees the proposal as a push toward cheaper labour, warning it could hurt long-term job quality at the venue. With an 87% vote against the offer, more action could be on the way in 2026.
If you wonder how big Crown Melbourne is, think about it as Australia’s answer to Vegas. Glitzy, huge, and now caught in a very public labour showdown.
