BetMGM Voids $389,000 Winning Player Prop Bet in Chicago
A suburban Chicago military veteran thought he’d hit the jackpot during an NBA game — nearly $389,000 from four $500 bets on player props (rebounds and assists) in the Chicago Bulls vs. Indiana Pacers matchup. Things, however, went horribly wrong.
What Happened Minutes Before Tipoff
Mark Aiello placed the wagers seven hours before tipoff, got them approved (even after a BetMGM trader reviewed at least one), and watched excitedly as all six legs cashed in. He was already dreaming about his daughter’s college fund.
Then, minutes before the game started, the BetMGM app greyed out the bets, as they were voided. The reason? An “obvious error of incorrect or inflated odds” per house rules. Aiello’s stakes were returned, but the massive payout… disappeared.
Confused and angry, he pointed out the bets stood for hours without issue.
Similar Cases of Voided Bets
A similar case happened in 2023 with another player whose $214K win was also voided — BetMGM eventually paid out only after media attention.
Aiello filed a complaint with the Illinois Gaming Board. Regulators, however, sided with BetMGM, ruling the pricing glitch was a human error caught in time, so the void was fair. If the correct (much lower) odds had applied, he’d have won about $40K — still nothing from the company.
For Aiello, the fun is gone from sports betting. BetMGM reported the issue to regulators but offered no further details. A harsh reminder: in sports betting, “obvious error” clauses can wipe out dreams in a click.
