Manhunt for Philippine Gambling Tycoon Charlie “Atong” Ang in 34 Missing Cockfighting Workers Case
Philippine police are hunting gambling mogul Charlie “Atong” Ang, wanted in connection with the disappearance of 34 online cockfighting workers (“sabungeros”) in 2021–2022, as local news outlet Sunstar reports.
Charlie “Atong” Ang Vanishes Amid Legal Charges
Ang, who ran the now-banned e-sabong (online cockfighting) company Lucky 8 Star Quest Inc., has vanished. Authorities believe he may have fled to Cambodia — there’s no record of him leaving through official ports. Courts in Laguna and Batangas issued non-bailable warrants earlier last month, charging Ang with kidnapping with homicide and serious illegal detention.
Details of the Missing E-Sabong Workers
The missing men were gamefowl handlers, aides, drivers, and others tied to e-sabong betting. Prosecutors say they were killed on Ang’s orders to stop bout-rigging that cut into profits. Key evidence comes from a former security chief turned state witness who claims the disappearances were meant to send a message.
Controversies Surrounding Ang and the E-Sabong Industry
Ang denies everything, calling it a frame-up, and his lawyers question witness credibility. E-sabong was shut down nationwide in 2022 amid massive public outrage over the case.
Ang has a long, controversial history. In the late 1990s he was tied to then-President Joseph Estrada through illegal jueteng numbers games. Estrada appointed him a PAGCOR consultant — supposedly to fight illegal gambling — while critics said it let Ang tighten his grip on the sector. When Estrada faced impeachment in 2000 over corruption, authorities named Ang the middleman collecting jueteng payoffs (about US$7 million at the time). He fled, gambled in Las Vegas in 2001 where police arrested him, and then served prison time.
The case keeps the spotlight on Ang’s past and the dark side of the Philippines’ once-booming online cockfighting industry. The search continues.
