Brazil Approves Long List of Sports for Fixed-Odds Betting, Issues 68 Licenses to Online Gaming Operators

Less than 24 hours before the official launch of Brazil’s regulated sports betting market, the Ministry of Sports has confirmed a long list of approved sports for fixed-odds betting. The list includes popular sports such as football, basketball, tennis, and surfing, as well as more obscure options like skateboarding, diving, and equestrianism. These activities are in line with those recognized by the International Olympic

Committee, as well as various Paralympic sports. With the sport occupying an astonishing 86% of sports betting GGR, football is the sport
likely to dominate the punters’ attention, but the inclusion of such a broad array of sports underlines the ambition of Brazil to offer the world some of the most varied betting markets, catering for a wide and diverse audience.

68 Online Gaming Licenses and 67 Sports Betting Licenses Issued

But more telling than the sports betting announcement, however, was the movement in licensing from online gambling and sports wagering operators. To date, a total of 68 licenses have been issued to online gaming operators, a mix of both local and international brands. One of the operators that confirmed earlier today it had received its online gaming license was Novibet.

The operator tally currently stands at 67: 14 unconditional and 52 provisional. As the market gets on its feet and as licensing evaluations are wrapped up, these numbers can be expected to adjust accordingly.

Market Launches with Stringent Regulation

News of the licensing comes on the heels of word earlier this month that Brazil had started approving its first round of online gambling applications. Salsa Gator recently revealed it had received GLI certification for online gaming operations. With Brazil about to open its sports betting market, the proactive approach of the government in terms of licensing and regulation would appear to underscore a
commitment to creating a strong and well-regulated gambling environment.

With such a long list of approved sports and such a large number of licensed operators, everything is in place for a landmark year in the gaming industry in Brazil.
